GEM Contributes to Parliamentary Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in Schools

FVG WECGEM Co-Founder Dr Fiona Vera-Gray gave evidence to the Women & Equalities Select Committee inquiry into Sexual Harassment & Violence in Schools on 7th June 2016. The GEM submission – available here – recommends that sexual harassment and violence in schools is examined in the context of a media that discriminates against women and girls, and which shapes and influences the lives of young people. We argue that the pervasiveness of sexualised sexism (‘sexualisation’), image-based sexual abuse (‘revenge porn’) and sexist online harassment creates the conditions within which harassment, violence and abuse thrive in schools.

The evidence session gave rise to considerable media debate where Dr Fiona Vera-Gray emphasised the importance of high quality and age-appropriate sex & relationships education.
