New Appointment to Council of Europe Expert Committee on Tech-Facilitated Violence Against Women

I am honoured to be appointed to the Council of Europe’s newly established Committee of Experts on Combating Technology-Facilitated Violence against Women and Girls. This Committee is mandated to draw up by 2025 a draft Recommendation on combating technology-facilitated violence against women and girls.

The aim of the Recommendation is to present a comprehensive approach to combating technology-facilitated violence against women and girls, ensuring all 47 Member States of the Council of Europe provide victims with effective responses, in particular within the framework of criminal law, with a view to preventing and combating these widespread forms of violence.

The establishment of the Committee is a very positive step forward in placing responsibility with Governments to do more to combat online violence against women and girls.

My work for the Committee will be drawing particularly on the Thematic Guidance on the Digital Dimension of Violence Against Women and Girls that I prepared with colleagues for a number of international organisations working in this space in 2022 which include the UN Special Rapporteur on VAW, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights’ Rapporteur on the Rights of Women, the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa and the Committee of Experts of the Follow-up Mechanism to the Belém do Pará Convention (MESECVI). This was under the auspices of the EDVAW organisation.
