Why I met my rapist: One woman explains how a face-to-face meeting brought closure (The Independent, September 2015)

This article shares the story of a brave woman who faced her abuser. She found this a valuable experience, feeling some element of justice and closure. In considering the use of restorative justice more generally, I raised concerns that in cases of domestic abuse, there is a risk that a restorative conference can be abusive itself. I explained that: “The abuser may, for example, use some signals or looks that others won’t pick up on, but the person who has been in the abusive relationship will immediately understand.” Caution needs to be exercised, with these risks guarded against by ensuring expert facilitators, extensive preparation and support for survivor
